Alison Bechdel, creator of the immensely popular Dykes to Watch Out For comic strip, has been nominated for two Will Eisner Awards, prestigious honors given out for excellence in graphic fiction.

This writer spoke with Bechdel in Minneapolis, about a half hour after Robert Kirby, creator of the comic strip Curbside, told her the good news.

"I'm very pleased," she said.

"Actually, Rob and I were just talking about how separate the comic book scene is [from comic strips], and how neither of us has ever really been a part of it."

With the exception of Bechdel's nominations for Best Humor Publication and Best Artist/Writer-Humor for the collection Post-Dykes to Watch Out For, almost all of the nominees primarily work in

comic books, not comic strips.

"I think it's sort of hard to occupy two different subcultural ghettoes at once, and I've always been much more allied with the gay and lesbian literary world than with the comics world," Bechdel said.

While she's been doing the strip since 1983, to the best of her knowledge this is her first mainstream comic award.

"I don't really know the history of the Eisner Awards, sad to say, so I don't know how to gauge the strip versus comic book thing," she confided. "I suspect strips tend not to be taken quite as seriously as comics, so I guess this is an honor."

Also nominated for Eisners are openly gay Kent native P. Craig Russell for his operatic adaptation The Ring of the Nibelung, and Judd Winick for his autobiographical Pedro and Me, chronicling his friendship with gay AIDS educator and Real World 3 co-star Pedro Zamora.

Dykes to Watch Out For has appeared in the Gay People's Chronicle since 1988, and Curbside first appeared in this paper in 1994.

BYRIDER

Scummy, but not slimy

Suzanne Ledel, public relations director of Cleveland's Doba Dobama Theatre, and Dan Kilbane, managing and artistic director for Dobama's Night Kitchen, pose for two separate photographers at once on April 14, just before the Second Annual Scummy Awards.

The Scummys are a spoof, improvisational awards show for excellence in daytime public-access cable soap operas, and are presented in conjunction with the Night Kitchen's improvisational soap opera satire Soap Scum, now in its third year. Anthony Glassman
